The picture on the left is the older of the two and shows piles of materials along the center and also an employee for each machine.
Toyota management reorganized the line so that operators were responsible for multiple processes, while new machine conveyors kept the line moving. World class engineering and employee creativity in action. Not a bit of continuous improvement ideas software in sight too !
