Running Vetter (our employee engagement tool) means I'm thinking about employee engagement all day every day. That said - defining EE is still very tricky, so tricky I won’t even attempt it! I’ll refer you to the definitions of more knowledgeable folk than I:

  1. "Employee engagement is generally seen as an internal state of being – both physical, mental and emotional – that brings together earlier concepts of work effort, organisational commitment, job satisfaction and ‘flow’ (or optimal experience)." CIPD

  2. "Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee has to the organization and its goals." Kevin Kruse - writing for Forbes
  3. "Employee engagement is a workplace approach designed to ensure that employees are committed to their organisation’s goals and values, motivated to contribute to organisational success, and are able at the same time to enhance their own sense of well-being." Engage For Success
  4. "Employee engagement is the extent to which employees feel passionate about their jobs, are committed to the organization, and put discretionary effort into their work." Source

  5. "Employee engagement is employees who positively engage not only the customer, but everything about the business where they are employed." Brandon Morris

  6. "Employee engagement is a property of the relationship between an organization and its employees. An engaged employee is one who is fully absorbed by and enthusiastic about their work and so takes positive action to further the organization's reputation and interests." Wikipedia

  7. "Employee engagement is to HR what customer loyalty is to marketing and sales. It is that often elusive frame of mind that goes beyond satisfaction and ensures the long-term and productive tenure of the faithful employee with the employer." Source
